Report Claims that California has some of the worst air polluted Cities in the U.S.
California is a state that is blessed with beautiful landscapes, but those same landscapes also seem cursed at times. According to a report by the American Lung Association, conducted from 2013-2015, California is home to 8 out of the 10 worst air polluted cities in the United States. This is due to a combination of factors that make some of California’s cities the worst places to breathe air. Two of these factors are California’s topography and its large populous cities. Paul Billings, the senior vice president of advocacy at the American Lung Association, states:
No state has done more to address air pollution than California has done over the last 50 years. But they also have the biggest problems.
Many of the cities that made it to the top 10 in most of the categories on the report are in the Central Valley, which has a topography that is unfortunately shaped like a bowl. Bakersfield seems to be the most air polluted city in the nation because it consistently ranked in the top two in most of the air quality categories.
The upside to this report is that the overall air quality in the United States has been improving over the years.
